2008 Augusta Class Letter

Week 3
Irish/Celtic Week
Celtic Arts for Kids
Cindy Matyi

Greetings Celtic Art Students,

Have you ever wondered how they did it? Those whirling spirals, interlacing ribbons and twisting, fantastic figures of Celtic art look like they were made by supernatural beings with wild imaginations and extremely good eyesight! Now you can learn the secrets of the ancient Celts who used these designs on armor, weapons, jewelry and books. A few simple tricks will make it possible for you to create your own Celtic pictures. In this class we will learn some secrets for drawing these complicated designs, share some interesting history on the Celts, and help you create projects of your own. By the end of the week you will have some fine pieces to show and you will join the ranks of contemporary Celtic artists who are preserving this ancient tradition!

If you are already making art, feel free to bring materials with you such as:

  • Fine point sharpie colored markers

  • Ruler, compass, circle guides

  • Other materials to work in if desired (watercolors, acrylics, etc.)

  • Examples of Celtic art to share

  • Sketchbooks

But don’t worry because all materials will be provided for you to complete the class projects including hand outs. Here is a reference for a good book to study on your own if you like:

Draw Your Own Celtic Designs by David James and Vitor Gonzalez (a very nice new workbook with step-by-step drawings and historical notes). Publisher David & Charles, UK ISBN 0 7153 1525 0 paperback
