2008 Augusta Craft Class Letter

Hello,

So you are taking enamelling. Good choice! Enamelling is one of the most exciting crafts (but I may be prejudiced!). I chose to do it during Irish week because the Irish were enamelling as long ago as 300B.C., and most of my inspiration comes from Celtic design.

What is enamel you ask? Well it's glass - glass that is fused onto metal at very high temperatures. The glass is ground up into a fine powder and applied to the metal, and then fired in a kiln (for a very short period - 1 or 2 minutes - just enough to melt the glass)

There are a number of different ways that we can explore about how to fuse it to the metal: sifting, stencils, under-glaze, painting and cloisonné.  You can expect to make at least three completed pieces by the end of the week. - even if you have never enamelled before! Even if you think you don't have any talent - you too will be able to make something beautiful! If you have enamelled before and wish to try a more complex project, that can be done too. Students will work to their level.

To get an idea of what other beginners have done in my classes, look at www.imagocorvi.com/student.htm.

I have been enamelling for over 20 years, and I am still excited about it. There is something about putting dull materials into a kiln and watching them be transformed into something beautiful that can't be beat.

I hope you will come and have fun! I will have everything that you need - just bring a pencil and paper and your imagination! Please feel free to contact me at

See you there
