2008 Augusta Class Letter

Week 4
Bluegrass Week
Intermediate Bluegrass Fiddle

Buddy Spicher

Students:

I’m really looking forward to meeting each of you and helping you progress in your fiddle endeavors. You are welcome to bring tape recorders and manuscript paper. No handouts will be given.

I will begin with an understanding of chord progressions. Students will gain knowledge of arpeggios, minors and majors in all 12 keys.

I will be teaching about major sevenths, dominant sevenths, minor seconds and how to use them when backing up a singer.  I will be teaching special intros, turn arounds, solos and runs that greats are famous for and have been so gracious to share with me. I will teach you how to use some of these styles on at least 10 bluegrass standards. Depending on how things progress, we may get more songs and subjects introduced.

I will go with the majority of the class as to how much time we spend before moving forward to the next lesson. I’ll use class participation, with me playing and students answering. We will do solos when you feel comfortable and we have learned the basic melodies. If there is any class member who likes to sing, please send me a tape at P.O. Box 60753, Nashville, TN, 37206.  Maybe I can use you to emphasize where to and when not to play when someone sings.

Thanks,

Buddy Spicher
