Week 2
Swing Week
Dancing to the music of the Swing Era: ADVANCED
Joel and Alison Plys

Coordinator’s NoteJoel and Alison will be teaching the advanced swing dance classes all week, both in the morning and afternoon, except for the Tuesday and Thursday afternoon classes, when the advanced students will get a chance to work with Michael & Jaya.   The dance teachers and I thought it would be nice for ALL of the dance students to get a chance to work with ALL of the dance teachers at least a little bit during the week.  -WB

We will share with you our vast knowledge of the social dances of the Swing Era with the primary focus of the Lindy Hop. We will explore the evolution of the Lindy hop by beginning with 1920s Charleston, the predecessor of the dance. We will see how as the music evolved, so did the dance.

Our classes will integrate 20s Charleston, Lindy Hop, and 30s Charleston. We will work on seamlessly blending all forms as the original dancers did in the Savoy Ballroom of New York City. We may also introduce some of the dances that were being done in other regions of the country such The Balboa of Southern California.

At the advanced level, our classes will incorporate the following elements:

  • Dancing to ALL tempos

  • Advanced figures

  • Footwork

  • Spins and turns

  • Musicality

  • Jazz movement

  • Syncopations

We will also teach a short piece of performance choreography. The piece will reflect the skill set we are teaching and be a whole lot of fun!

All of these skills will be taught within the foundation of social dance - connection with your partner! There will be an emphasis on expanding leading and following skills so that we enjoy the most joyful form of improvisation.
