Week 4
Craft & Folklore
Mountain Dulcimer Construction
Keith Young
Students will learn craftsmanship in
the process of building a fretted mountain dulcimer. Instruction stresses good
craftsmanship, design, joinery, and finishing techniques and safe use of hand
and power tools (band saw, drill press, and bench sander). Instrument repair is
taught if there is a need or an interest.
No prior woodworking experience is necessary to build a dulcimer, just a will to
learn and build a fine-sounding instrument. Solid Appalachian hardwoods are used
and, if desired, butternut or spruce for the soundboard. Experienced woodworkers
may choose to customize the shape of the body or length of the fretboard. All
students are encouraged to design their own sound holes.
A long time Augusta
instructor, Keith works with students of various woodworking experience from
novice to master. Students will take home a finished instrument.
