My main objective while teaching at the Augusta
Blues Week will be to help the students learn EXACTLY what they need
to know and do to sound like a competent and seasoned player while
simultaneously having a great and memorable time.
My area of expertise is the traditional acoustic prewar and
amplified postwar playing styles and all their nuances. We will spend plenty of
time focusing on: how to breathe correctly, various hand techniques for acoustic
and amplified playing, throat tremolo and vibrato, tongue blocking, note
bending, and developing the BIGGEST possible tone and sound. All this will be
done while examining transcriptions of some classic songs for the advanced class
and a “study instrumental” for the intermediate class.
The bare minimum that students need to bring to my class is
their harmonicas. Serious ones should also bring an audio recorder. I encourage
those who desire to get the maximum benefits to write me and explain their
playing goals, struggles, etc.
