Bluegrass Week
Advanced Bluegrass Mandolin
Herschel Sizemore
Born in 1935, Herschel
Sizemore grew up listening to his mother sing and play guitar to his
father’s old time fiddling. At the age of eight, he saw Bill Monroe & the
Bluegrass Boys on the Grand Ole Opry. His mother, Rebecca, recalls him
exclaiming; "That's what I want to do when I'm grown." Herschel has
distinguished himself from his mandolin peers with a close adherence to melody
and an incredible clarity of tone which many consider to be a pioneer divergence
of style from the established Monroe model. He has played with some of the
greatest bands in bluegrass including Jimmy Martin and the Sunny Mountain Boys,
Del McCoury and the Dixie Pals and the Bluegrass Cardinals. His original
mandolin composition, Rebecca, remains one of the most-recorded and often-played
classics in bluegrass music.
